1987 O-Pee-Chee #178

Folks who collected baseball/hockey cards 15-20 years ago remember the O-Pee-Chee brand. They were Topps clones released "exclusively" in Canada (but always somehow found their way to my local hobby shop... hmmmm).

I don't quite remember Cecil's time with the Jays, but due to the lack of "action" shots on his cards between the years 1986 and 1989, I assume he wasn't getting much playing time.

You either loved the wood borders or hated them. There was no in-between!

The card stock of the OPC was a little crisper than it's Topps counterpart. Also, these cards were bi-lingual (Any French Candians in the house??!!).

1997 Bowman's Best #2

Hey! It's a Cecil Fielder card!

I got a bit carried away last week as the Topps S2 madness continued and was just too much for me to handle (I keep telling myself, it's a marathon, not a sprint!). I sent out a couple of packages this week, put some bids up on the 'Bay (won some, lost some) and finally found some time for Big Daddy (not you jaybee!)...

Since I'm watchin' the Yanks/Philly game, howz about a Fielder Yankee card.

A chrome card before the chrome cards (I assume). Looks almost like an insert. It might just be the pinstripes but this card does nothin' for me.

1992 Fleer "The Performer" Collection #7 (of 24)

This was one of the last years I collected cards. The green borders were pretty bland, it seemed like Fleer just didn't care this year. Basically the same as the base card (except for a different photo and card number), this card was available at Citgo gas stations/7 Elevens as a parallel/bonus set.

Photobucket

I saw one on the 'bay for a dollar. There was also a graded one for $15.

1996 Sportflix #55

Sportflix (or Sportflics as I remembered them) were the shit back in 1986. I'm pretty sure this is the last year these were put out (I could be wrong), so that's all I'll say about this set. Here's the card...

Stolen bases - 0.

1996 Leaf Studio #54

Photobucket

In honor of the Tigers sweeping the lowly Indians this past weekend (complete with a game that included "the catch"), we're goin' totally Tiger cards. Sorry about the short Rookie Card Week, if anything it'll give me more time to acquire the '86 Topps Tiffany.

Photobucket

The '96 Studio is great looking, even if it does look like a "before" pic for the Just For Men beard color. Two full color shots on the front and a pic and a head shot on the back. Some might argue the silver foil on the front is tough to read, but i'm a fan. If it doesn't do it for you, there is a gold foil parallel.

Depending on your shopping preference, this card's a buck on ebay or .18 cents on Sportlots.

Rookie Card Week - 1986 Donruss #512

Photobucket

This is Cecil's only non-posed rookie card. Leaf/Donruss (at the time) went out of there way to catch the future Big Daddy in some game-action. Not the worst Donruss design of the 80s but certainly not the best (1987). I dare you not to like the powder blue backs! What made these mid-80s cards stand out from Topps and Fleer was the inclusion of a players middle name on the back (I clearly remember "Louis Rodman Whitaker", as if that name could get any cooler).

Photobucket

What you might of not known is... That Cecil was drafted by the Royals in 1982 then promptly traded to the Jays the following year.

Rookie Card Week - 1986 Toronto Blue Jays Fire Safety / Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs Card

Photobucket

Photobucket

Boy that's a mouthful! We'll kick Rookie Card Week off with a bootleg. Probably only available in Toronto, these cards we're "giveaways" co-sponsored by the Jays and Ontario Fire Fighters. Not sure who else is in the set, but it's a whopping 36 cards deep! You can find this card for a couple bucks from various online dealers. This one cost me 35 cents. Not a great speciman, BGS would probably give it a 6 'cuz of the off-centering. Oh well.

1996 Upper Deck #70

Photobucket

I love "throwback uni" cards!!! Cecil's rockin' the Detroit Stars Negro League Uniform from the 1920s, on the front and back of this card. The '96 UD's were decent looking, i like the copper logo and nice, full, borderless photo. The back doesn't sport any wasted space, just another large pic and abbreviated stats.

Photobucket

Cecil was traded to the Yankees in July of '96 for Ruben Sierra. New York won the World Series that year. Big Daddy got a ring.
